October 31st
is Hallowe'en, a very old festival -more than 2000 years old!- and you can expect to meet witches and ghosts that night. Hallowe'en is an old word for "Hallows Evening," the night before "All Hallows" or "All Saints' Day".
On that one night of the year, ghosts and witches are free. Well, that's the traditional story. A long time ago, people were afraid and stayed at home on Hallowe'en. But now in Britain it's a time for fun. There are always a lot of parties on October 31st. At these parties people wear masks and they dress as ghosts and witches, or another monster. And some people make special Hallowe'en lamps from a large fruit -the pumpkin.

Popular games

Snap Apple - Hang apples on pieces of string. Players try to catch an
apple with their teeth.

Bob Apple is a traditional Halloween game. You need a large bowl and some apples. Fill the bowl with water and put the apples in the water. Players put their hands behind their backs. They must try to pick up an apple with their teeth.

Fortune Telling
Peel an apple. The peel must be one long piece. Throw the peel over your shoulder. Can you see the shape of a letter? It shows the first leter of the name of the person you will marry!

Another very common tradition is to go trick-or-treating. Children go from door to door asking for candies. Neighbours give them sweets and if this is not done, they will suffer ... a treat! Many times the "punishment" for not giving candies is having your house egged!!
